This can be prevented if you try these tips to extend the life of your plumbing system.

Prepare your System for the Cold Season
Lower temperatures mean risks. Water pipes are the first to get affected by a cold temperature if proper precaution isn’t taken. Running water can cause frozen buildup in the pipes. This can lead them to burst unexpectedly. Whenever shut off the water supply of your outdoor faucets as this can save you a lot of money. Insulating your water pipes can prevent future haphazard. In the long run, the high upfront cost is worth it. Make sure pipes in small unheated spaces such as your attic, basement and garage are insulated as well as they are primarily exposed to the cold weather. Insulating your water pipes can prevent water damage.

Unclog your Drains
Limit garbage disposal down the drain. Avoid throwing down your food in the drain as it can easily get stuck and remain there for a crucial time. No shells or peels should go down the drain. Ever. Purchase a portable drain brush and clean the drain every once in a while. Remove build-up and food deposits on the blades in the drain. Drain covers work wonderfully in keeping unwanted hair or dirt out of the drain. This lets water flow smoothly and increases pipe protection. Use plungers instead of chemical drain cleaners to unclog your toilets as chemical cleaners leave behind dangerous residue.

Keep up with Maintenance
Taking precautionary measures regularly can greatly increase your plumbing system’s life. Performing a routine check annually will save you a lot of money and time in the future. Hire a professional to identify developing problems and plumbing issues so you can tackle them beforehand.

Install Water Softeners
Magnesium and calcium are sediments that are harmful to water. They create several issues for your dishwasher, shower, washing machine and other appliances. It causes a buildup in pipes, causes corrosion and clogs up the pipes. Water softeners help in removing these sediments and prevent hard water development. This is a small but reliable investment that can increase the life of your plumbing system.

Maintain Water Pressure
Install a water pressure gauge to ensure that the water pressure in your house ranges from 45 to 80 psi. If it’s higher than this, then it will stress out the whole system. The pipes won’t be able to withstand the pressure for long and wear off quicker than usual. A regulator will be able to manage the pressure and maintain it at a safer level.
